“Never get so interested in believing that you forget to think.”

That's a great motto. I always get very irritated with people who say their faith is strong, yet can't stand listening to other's ideas, or even questioning it. Blind faith has never struck me as being much faith at all.

"Thanks for sharing your experince. It sounds like you really are an Only. Could be one of those exceptions to Birth Order. Cliff"

Oh, no- I'm a Fourth Born, for sure. Every last one of those traits describe me to a 't'. :)

As a Fourth Born with two Fourth Born parents, I find that I definitely have that Only skew and this is just one more thing that makes it obvious. I absolutely had an imaginary friend until I was about four years old that I was very close to. I think it worried my parents, so they introduced me to some kids my age and paid to send me to pre-school even though money was tight. I continued to have a rich imaginary world even after I had plenty of 'real' friends, though. I also find myself needing the alone time that you speak of in this article. The less alone time I get, the more antsy I get.

As a fourth born, I think we also use our ability to be someone else to make others think they understand us. It's sometimes easier to just act the way someone thinks we are or expects us to be rather than beating our head against the brick wall of getting them to understand us. And the lack of anyone ever really attempting to understand us from childhood ingrains in us the thinking that no one really cares to understand so why put forth all the effort.

Interesting. I'm a fourth born and I am actually a very good listener, so much so that I've moved up in the ranks quickly at my workplace in large part because of my listening skills. I can listen to what the customer is saying and figure out how to tailor technology to best suit them. And I've counseled some of our Help Desk people on how best to listen to people when trying to help them.

Wow, yeah, this is spot on. As a Fourth Born, I often question what my personality actually is. I tend to adjust my personality to fit in best with my environment. So, who I am at work differs from who I am with my friends and even from one group of friends to another. It really does help me work well anywhere and get along well with many different types of people, but it also adds to my sense of never belonging anywhere.

Also, I may be an actor, but my best friends know exactly who I am. Those are the three people in the world I feel like accept me enough to be myself around them. A lack of judgement helps a Fourth Born open up more than anything else.

I'm a fourth born, too, and I definitely have to stop myself from being cutting when joking with people. Being a fourth born also helps me understand what crosses the line and ends up hurting people's feelings more than others. One of my co-workers is an Only and we both tend to be the jokesters in the office, but often he'll make a joke that I refrained from because it was hurtful. I'll say something to him later about it and he'll go apologize for saying it.
